Official Commercial 5G Launch Date Revealed After Multiple Delays

The Pakistan Telecom Association is facing challenges in the 5G auction. There have been concerns over delays in the launch of 5G services in the country, and the 5G spectrum auction is expected by June 2025.

A commercial launch of the 5G spectrum is anticipated in the first quarter of 2026.  According to PTA documents, the PTA consultants have completed the telecom market assessment. The consultations on telecom reforms with stakeholders are ongoing as well.

The auction process has reached the stage of spectrum pricing and auction design. The advisory committee will send policy recommendations to the government within a month, according to the PTA. After the recommendations, the government will issue a policy directive.

Delays in the merger of two telecom companies are causing these issues. Cases related to the 2600 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 1800 MHz bands are pending in courts at the same time. 140 MHz spectrum cases in the 2600 MHz band are unresolved, and a 6.6 MHz spectrum case in the 1800 MHz band is pending. A 10 MHz spectrum case in the 2100 MHz band is also unresolved.

The cost of developing 5G infrastructure is another challenge, while the availability of 5G devices will also be a major hurdle. However, with the arrival of 5G, data rates and quality of service will improve. 5G will also lay the foundation for IT services in the country, PTA documents state. The introduction of 5G will lead to an increase in foreign direct investment.

5G should help boost GDP, and the launch of 5G services will create new job opportunities. It will revolutionize education, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and industry. 5G will also enhance e-governance and disaster management, claims PTA.
