Pakistan’s cycling team has made history at the 44th Asian Road Cycling Championship, securing an impressive sixth place in the overall medal standings. This marks the country’s best-ever performance in continental cycling, with the national team bringing home a record-breaking total of six medals: two gold, two silver, and two bronze.
According to a press release from the Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF), key performers included Ali Ilyas Jawaid, who clinched gold in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) and silver in the Road Race. Rabia Garib also shone brightly, winning gold in the Road Race and silver in the ITT. Adding to the team’s success, Zainab secured two bronze medals in both the ITT and Road Race categories.
Official spokesperson of the Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF), Adnan Ahsan, lauded the players for their outstanding performances and unwavering commitment to the sport. He stated, “Pakistan has immense raw talent in cycling and other sports, but financial support remains a major hurdle. At present, it is only the Pakistan Cycling Federation, with the help of private sponsors, that is keeping the sport alive in the country. If given proper resources and state support, our athletes have the potential to shine on even bigger platforms.”
This achievement is not just a victory for the players but also a significant milestone for cycling in Pakistan. The athletes have demonstrated that with passion, perseverance, and the right opportunities, they can compete at the highest levels. Their success should serve as an inspiration for young cyclists across the country and as a reminder that investment in sports can lead to international recognition for Pakistan.
“The Pakistan Cycling Federation remains committed to nurturing cycling talent and continues to push for better infrastructure, training facilities, and financial support for athletes. This victory highlights the need for broader government and corporate backing to ensure that cycling and other sports can flourish in Pakistan,” he added.
Adnan further stated that, “The Pakistan Cycling Federation remains committed to nurturing cycling talent and continues to push for better infrastructure, training facilities, and financial support for athletes. This victory highlights the need for broader government and corporate backing to ensure that cycling and other sports can flourish in Pakistan.”
The success of the cycling team at the Asian Road Cycling Championship is attributed to robust training programs implemented by the SSGC Sports Board and the Bikestan Cycling Academy Karachi, which have played a crucial role in developing cycling talent in the country. These initiatives have provided athletes with the necessary resources and support to excel on the international stage.
In light of this remarkable achievement, sports officials are now calling for increased investment and sponsorship to build on this momentum. The hope is that with continued support, Pakistan can further enhance its presence in international cycling and nurture the next generation of cycling champions.
