Former Australian Cricket Star Convicted in Cocaine Case

Former Australian cricketer Stuart MacGill has been convicted of participating in the supply of cocaine, marking a dramatic turn in the life of the 54-year-old who once represented Australia in 44 Test matches.

Stuart MacGill, best known for his role as a leg-spinner, was found guilty of a single charge related to the illegal supply of drugs in Sydney. Despite pleading not guilty, jurors at New South Wales District Court heard that MacGill was a regular user of the illicit substance and had been purchasing the drug from a dealer over several years.

The court proceedings revealed that MacGill introduced his partner’s brother to his drug dealer, identified only as ‘Person A’, during a meeting at his Sydney restaurant in April 2021. The case centred around a 330,000 Australian dollar transaction for a kilogram of cocaine, although MacGill maintained that his involvement was limited to merely facilitating the introduction.

While the jury cleared Stuart MacGill of being part of the commercial drug supply operation, they convicted him on the lesser charge of knowingly taking part in the supply of a prohibited substance.

This conviction marks a new low for the former cricketer, following a career that once had promise. MacGill’s cricketing career, which spanned from 1988 to 2008, saw him take 208 wickets in Test matches. However, much of his career was overshadowed by the prominence of fellow Australian spinner Shane Warne, one of cricket’s all-time greats.

This is not the first time Stuart MacGill has been involved in dramatic events. In 2021, he made headlines when he was allegedly kidnapped, assaulted, and threatened with a gun before being released. New South Wales police arrested four men in connection with that incident.

MacGill is scheduled to be sentenced in May 2025 for his involvement in the drug case, with his once-illustrious cricket legacy now marred by legal troubles.
