Needle-Free Injection Used in Polio Eradication Campaign in Pakistan

US-based PharmaJet, a company dedicated to enhancing injectable performance through needle-free injection technology, has announced that its Tropis intradermal (ID) delivery system was recently utilized in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) polio eradication campaign in Pakistan.

The supplemental immunization activity (SIA) targeted children aged 4 to 59 months and was implemented in two key regions: the Quetta block (including Pishin, Quetta, Kila Abdullah, and Chaman) and Karachi (Central Karachi, East, East-Gujro, Keamari, Korangi, Malir, and West). As part of a WHO-recommended strategy to enhance humoral immunity, Tropis was used to administer a fractional dose of the inactivated polio vaccine (fIPV) alongside the oral polio vaccine (OPV).

Evidence from polio immunization campaigns in Pakistan, Somalia, and Nigeria has shown that Tropis improves coverage, acceptability, speed of administration, and cost efficiency. Previous WHO campaigns that vaccinated over 10 million children in Pakistan and Somalia demonstrated that Tropis is an effective and preferred solution, increasing campaign coverage by more than 18%.

Additionally, a recent randomized controlled implementation study in Nigeria revealed that IPV2 coverage was over 11% higher among children vaccinated with Tropis compared to those treated with the Standard of Care (SoC). The study also highlighted a potential 47% reduction in total immunization costs, with 95% of healthcare workers preferring Tropis over traditional methods.

Tropis is the first and only needle-free ID delivery technology to receive WHO prequalification, reinforcing its effectiveness in large-scale immunization efforts.
