Counterpoint Research has released its latest quarterly insights on global smartphone operating system (OS) trends. According to the data, Android remains the dominant global OS, followed by iOS, with HarmonyOS holding on to third place. However, the picture shifts dramatically in China, where HarmonyOS has now overtaken iOS in market share—a trend expected to continue into 2025.
Android Still on Top Globally
Despite a relatively flat smartphone market in 2024, Android remained the undisputed global leader. However, it recorded its lowest-ever quarterly share in Q4 2024 in markets like the United States and India. In the U.S., a decline among smaller Android brands was partially offset by stable sales from Motorola and Google, while iPhone sales dipped just 1%.
In contrast, India saw record iPhone sales in Q4, with nearly two-thirds of those being older-generation models. This reflects a growing demand for Apple devices in emerging markets, even as Android remains widely used due to its broader range of options and price points.
China: HarmonyOS Takes the Lead Over iOS
In China, the situation looks very different. HarmonyOS, developed by Huawei, consistently outperformed iOS in all four quarters of 2024, securing the second position behind Android. According to Counterpoint, government subsidies are helping fuel this momentum. The Chinese government is offering CNY 500 (roughly $70) subsidies on smartphones priced under CNY 6,000 (around $830) to boost domestic consumption, which is driving strong demand for HarmonyOS devices.
HarmonyOS holds a 4% global market share, but its dominance in China is expected to grow further in 2025. The report did not clarify if EMUI, Huawei’s global software variant, counts under the same category as HarmonyOS. However, the distinction is minor, as Huawei’s smartphone sales are now overwhelmingly focused on its home market.
While Android continues to lead globally, the rise of HarmonyOS in China signals a shift in regional OS preferences. As government support, local manufacturing, and brand loyalty shape consumer choices, the global OS landscape may see more localized dynamics in the years ahead.
