President Asif Ali Zardari has approved a special 180-day sentence reduction for eligible prisoners in honor of Pakistan Day and Eid-ul-Fitr. The decision, made under Article 45 of the Constitution, aims to provide relief to selected inmates.
However, the remission does not apply to those convicted of serious crimes, including murder, espionage, terrorism, rape, theft, robbery, and kidnapping. Prisoners involved in financial crimes, corruption, or offenses harming the national treasury are also excluded.
Additionally, individuals convicted under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Control of Narcotic Substances (Amendment) Act, 2022, will not benefit from the reduction.
The sentence reduction primarily targets elderly and vulnerable prisoners. Male inmates over 65 years old and female prisoners over 60 who have served at least one-third of their sentences qualify.
The relief also extends to women jailed with their children and juvenile offenders under 18 who have completed a third of their sentences.
Authorities will implement the remission in coordination with relevant departments, ensuring that only eligible prisoners benefit from the initiative.
