Tarbela Dam Power Generation Drops as Water Reaches Dead Level

Power generation at Tarbela Dam has sharply declined after the water level hit 1,402 feet, the dead level, affecting electricity supply nationwide.

With water inflows and outflows at 17,300 cusecs, 12 out of 17 power-generating units at Tarbela have shut down, leaving only five operational. These remaining units are producing around 440 to 455 megawatts (MW) for the national grid.

The decline has significantly impacted overall hydropower production, which has now fallen to approximately 1,100 MW. The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), which has an installed hydropower capacity of over 9,400 MW, is currently generating far below its potential.

The situation is further worsened by Mangla Dam, which has also reached its dead level, resulting in zero power generation. The Chashma reservoir is facing a similar crisis, leading to a severe drop in hydropower supply.

Tarbela remains the highest-producing hydel facility, contributing the majority of the current hydropower output. Officials warn that the water crisis could lead to a 30-35% shortage for provinces in the remaining days of the Rabi season, worsening irrigation and energy challenges.
