No Usable Water Left as Tarbela Dam Hits Dead Level

According to a private news channel, citing Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) sources, Pakistan’s largest reservoir, Tarbela Dam, has reached its dead level, with no usable water left.

The dead level stands at 1,402 feet for Tarbela dam, signaling a critical water shortage.

Meanwhile, Mangla Dam is also nearing its dead level, with water levels currently at 1,054 feet—just four feet above the critical mark of 1,050 feet. Reports indicate that Mangla still holds 77,000 acre-feet of usable water, but the situation remains concerning.

Experts warn that Pakistan loses nearly 35 million acre-feet of rainwater every year due to flooding and the lack of proper storage systems. This wasted water is equivalent to the total capacity of the country’s major reservoirs.

Despite Pakistan experiencing heavier-than-normal rainfall in recent years—16% more in 2023 and 142% above normal in August 2024 alone—most of this water is lost, mixing with sewage instead of being stored for future use.

With the country facing worsening water shortages, experts stress the urgent need for better infrastructure to conserve rainwater and improve water management strategies.
