The Edhi Foundation has pledged $4 million to equip the Breast Radiation Bay at Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) with state-of-the-art technology. Named after Abdul Sattar and Bilquis Edhi, the facility will offer free breast cancer treatment and is set to open in April 2026.
According to Dr. Tariq Mahmood, professor emeritus of radiation oncology at JPMC, the project is a collaboration between the Patients Aid Foundation (PAF) and the Sindh government. The facility will provide cutting-edge Helix Tomotherapy units, capable of precise radiation therapy with minimal risk to healthy organs.
Each day, 160 breast cancer patients will receive treatment at no cost. The Sindh government has committed to funding the maintenance and repairs of the equipment beyond its warranty period.
Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among women in Pakistan, with around 30,000 new cases reported annually. While chemotherapy and surgery are accessible, radiation therapy remains limited due to a lack of modern equipment.
JPMC’s oncology department, in partnership with PAF, has expanded its facilities significantly. The centre now offers free cancer treatment to patients from 167 Pakistani cities and 15 other countries, ensuring access to life-saving care without financial barriers.
