Govt to Cut Electricity Tariffs Soon: Power Minister

Power Minister Awais Leghari announced on Tuesday that electricity tariffs would be reduced in the coming days. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would soon deliver “good news” regarding discounted power prices.

Speaking at the inauguration of Pakistan’s first 120-kilowatt fast-charging station in Islamabad, Leghari dismissed speculation that electricity rates would remain unchanged.

The statement comes amid public frustration after an expected Rs. 8 per unit tariff cut did not materialize in the prime minister’s Pakistan Day speech. The government had earlier opted to keep fuel prices unchanged on March 15, increasing the petroleum levy by Rs. 10 per litre instead, with a pledge to redirect financial savings toward lowering power tariffs.

At the event, Leghari also announced a reduction in electric vehicle charging rates from Rs. 71 to Rs. 39 per unit, aiming to make clean energy adoption more affordable. He praised public-private partnerships for driving sustainable energy initiatives and emphasized the government’s commitment to a greener future.

  • I see the minister is suffering from amnesia

He claimed last year that net metering rates are not decreasing. They did

Now an unclear policy that net metering contracts will be for 5 years. Nothing on what to do after those 5 years?

Also forcing people to pay charges despite the fact that they generate their own power.

The excuses don’t work. And the grid is expensive and it will create more issues for the country.

  • This person is very unpredictable. He doesn’t even know what he is saying. The minister applauding the 120 kW charging station forgetting how slow he is progressing without feeling any embarrassment is adding insult to injury. He should work harder without any influence or step down for someone more competent the fulfil the responsibilities.
