Lahore Traffic Police Hires Transgenders to Fight Begging

The Lahore Traffic Police has recruited two transgender individuals, Muskan and Khusboo, as Victim Support Officers to assist in the fight against organised begging networks in the city.

The initiative, aimed at dismantling begging rings involving women and transgender individuals, is part of a broader effort to address the root causes of street begging. Muskan and Khusboo will work alongside traffic police teams to identify female beggars and take action against them. Their responsibilities also include raising awareness about anti-begging operations and encouraging members of the transgender community to pursue lawful livelihoods.

The Traffic Police has also activated its Lady Traffic Warden Education Wing, which will conduct targeted crackdowns against female beggars. Offenders caught during these operations will either be detained and transferred to nearby police stations or rehabilitated at welfare organizations such as Edhi Homes.

Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) emphasized the importance of a balanced approach, stating, “Our goal is not just to eliminate begging but to provide sustainable solutions for those affected.” He highlighted that the initiative seeks to address the systemic issues behind street begging while ensuring the dignity and welfare of marginalized communities.

Rights activists have welcomed the move, calling it a significant step toward the inclusion of transgender individuals in law enforcement. By involving transgender officers in this initiative, the Traffic Police aims to foster trust and collaboration within the community while also providing them with meaningful employment opportunities.

This initiative marks a progressive step in addressing the challenges of organized begging in Lahore, combining strict enforcement with a rehabilitative approach to create long-term solutions for vulnerable populations.
