Record-Breaking Pakistani Doctors Get US Residency in 1 Year

In a remarkable achievement for Pakistan’s medical community, a record 1,061 doctors from the country have secured residency positions in the United States this year — the highest number ever recorded in a single year, revealed Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) President Professor Rizwan Taj on Tuesday.

Top medical institutions contributing to this milestone include King Edward Medical University, Allama Iqbal Medical College, Dow Medical College, Shifa College of Medicine, Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), and Khyber Medical University.

Professor Taj highlighted that this outstanding success reflects the high standards maintained by PMDC in regulating medical education across the country. He credited the council’s rigorous curricula and robust training programs for preparing Pakistani doctors to excel on international platforms.

“This achievement marks the beginning of a transformative journey,” said Dr. Taj, reaffirming PMDC’s commitment to nurturing academic excellence in the medical field. “With a rigorous system of checks and balances, the PMDC has played a pivotal role in guiding medical and dental colleges to uphold strong curricula and comprehensive training.”

He also emphasized the highly competitive nature of the US residency application process, which requires candidates to pass the demanding United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), demonstrate exceptional academic merit, and undergo extensive evaluations, including interviews and documentation.

“Only the most resilient and dedicated candidates succeed in such a challenging process,” Dr. Taj added. He expressed confidence that this achievement would further bolster PMDC’s vision of fostering excellence in medical education and preparing future healthcare professionals to meet global standards.
