Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have sounded an alert ahead of a heatwave expected to grip most districts of the province in the coming days.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) announced on Saturday that daytime temperatures are likely to rise steadily starting Monday. Forecasts suggest an increase of 4 to 6°C, while dry and dusty winds could affect various areas during afternoon and evening hours.
The Meteorological Department warned that the persistent hot and dry conditions may heighten the risk of heatstroke and worsen the water supply situation in many regions.
In preparation, the PDMA has instructed all district administrations and concerned agencies to implement safety measures. People have been advised to stay out of the sun between 10am and 5pm, particularly senior citizens and children who are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
To help mitigate the impact, the Health Department has been asked to ensure the availability of heatstroke treatment centres, and emergency medical staff and rescue units have been placed on alert. Farmers are also urged to secure sufficient water for their crops.
The advisory includes guidance for livestock and pet care during the hot spell, while motorists are advised to check their vehicles’ coolant levels and tyre pressure before travel.
The PDMA confirmed that its emergency operation centre remains active and citizens can report heat-related emergencies by calling 1700.
