The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has released a key clarification regarding the issuance of birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage records.
NADRA emphasized that the registration of births, deaths, and changes in marital status is conducted under provincial laws by the relevant Union Councils. NADRA then issues identity documents based on these records by federal law.
This clarification follows a video circulating on social media, where an individual expressed shock after discovering they had been officially declared deceased at a NADRA office.
NADRA explained that in this case, the death had been registered by a close relative at the concerned Union Council, and NADRA simply updated its records based on that entry.
The authority reiterated that responsibility for registering life events lies solely with Union Councils, while NADRA’s role is limited to issuing identity documents based on those registrations.
NADRA also disclosed that over 7 million deaths have been recorded at Union Councils nationwide. However, in many cases, family members have failed to inform NADRA or cancel the deceased’s identity cards.
To address this, text messages have been sent to the mobile numbers of such individuals or their relatives, advising them to visit the nearest NADRA office to cancel the ID card if the death is accurate.
In cases where the death registration is incorrect, families have been instructed to contact the relevant Union Council to get the records corrected.
