In a bid to tackle worsening air pollution, the Punjab government is moving to make fitness certificates compulsory for motorcycles.
The move aims to expand the existing vehicle fitness regime, which currently applies only to cars and other motor vehicles.
According to details, the proposed changes will be introduced in the Punjab Assembly under the “Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2025.”
The amendments will revise the Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965, specifically adding the word “motorcycle” alongside “vehicle” in Section 38-A. The bill has been forwarded to the relevant committee, which is expected to submit its report within two months.
If approved, motorcycle owners will be required to obtain a fitness certificate with a one-year validity, similar to existing regulations for vehicles.
Officials argue that with motorcycles making up 85% of daily commuting in Punjab.
The goal is to ensure road safety and reduce harmful emissions, which are a major contributor to smog during the winter season.
Authorities believe the move will also support efforts to improve air quality in the province, as part of a broader campaign against climate change and environmental degradation.
