Instagram Launches Edits Video Editor – A Free CapCut Rival

Instagram has officially launched Edits, a standalone video editing app that’s now available for free on both iOS and Android. Designed to attract content creators looking for more advanced tools than Instagram’s native options, Edits arrives with a full suite of editing features, performance insights, and content planning tools.

The app lets users manage projects, jot down creative notes, and monitor how their videos perform. But what sets Edits apart are the more sophisticated editing capabilities, features like AI-generated animations from still images, green screen effects, and automatic subject cutouts that go far beyond what Instagram’s in-app editor offers.

Meta’s Answer to CapCut

Instagram teased Edits just as US app stores temporarily removed TikTok and CapCut earlier this year, indicating that Instagram sees this new launch as a strategic move to compete.

Despite the overlap, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri insists Edits will carve out its own identity. He stated in comments on Threads that the app targets serious creators rather than everyday users and will differ from CapCut by offering a broader set of creative tools for a more focused audience.

More Upgrades Coming

Meta is already previewing future updates for Edits. These include keyframe-based animation tools, enhanced AI features, and collaborative editing that lets multiple users work on the same project. While these upgrades haven’t rolled out yet, they point to Edits being a long-term investment in Instagram’s creator ecosystem.
