The Sleeping Prince of Saudi Arabia: Al-Waleed bin Khaled Still in Coma After 20 Years

Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal, often referred to as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” marked his 36th birthday on April 18, 2025, while still in a coma—nearly two decades after a devastating car accident in 2005 caused severe brain trauma.

The prince was studying at a military college in London when the accident led to a brain haemorrhage. Since then, he has been on life support at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.

Despite medical recommendations to withdraw life support, his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, has consistently refused, remaining hopeful for a miracle. “If God had meant for him to die in that accident, he would have passed away then,” Prince Khaled once said, standing by his son with unwavering resolve.

Over the years, Prince Al-Waleed has shown slight signs of movement, such as twitching a finger or moving his head, but has yet to regain full consciousness.

His father has stayed close throughout, offering quiet strength and constant care.

As he turned 36, people around the world took to social media to express their support, post prayers, and share photos of the prince with his family. One heartfelt message came from Princess Rima bint Talal, who wrote on X: “My beloved Al-Waleed, twenty-one years and you are always present in our hearts. O Allah, heal Your servant Al-Waleed.”

A great-grandson of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, Prince Al-Waleed has become a symbol of faith and endurance for his family and well-wishers alike. His story continues to draw international attention, with many admiring his family’s dedication and belief in his eventual recovery.

Though doctors consider recovery after such a prolonged coma highly unlikely, there remains a sliver of hope that future medical breakthroughs might one day change his fate.
