An explosive device detonated inside a parked car in Balashikha, a town near Moscow, Russia.
According to reports from the Russian Investigative Committee, a senior Russian general, Yaroslav Moskalik, was killed on Friday.
The committee, responsible for probing major crimes, has opened a murder investigation into the blast.
The explosion caused a fire that destroyed the car. Security footage showed the blast happening just as someone approached the vehicle. Authorities said the bomb was an improvised explosive device filled with metal fragments to cause maximum damage.
Russian officials have not yet officially confirmed the death, but reports say Moskalik, deputy head of the military’s main operational directorate, was the victim.
This attack is similar to previous bombings targeting Russian military figures linked to the conflict in Ukraine. Kyiv has claimed responsibility for some past attacks.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to find those behind the blast.
