It has been 24 days since the new academic year began on April 1, and matriculation (Matric) students in Punjab government schools are still waiting for their textbooks.
The delay affects new subjects introduced this year, including Agriculture, Health Sciences, Computer, and Fashion Design, leaving students and parents frustrated.
Students are expected to start these courses in Class 9, but are disappointed by the lack of books. Many have called on Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to ensure immediate delivery.
Parents report that while the syllabus is available online, 90% of government school students lack mobile phones and internet access, making it hard for them to study or complete homework.
The Punjab School Education Department, however, claims the printing of matriculation textbooks is in progress and promises delivery within a week.
This delay echoes past issues, like the 2021 textbook shortage in Punjab, where books arrived months late due to logistical problems.
Critics argue the department should have prepared better, especially after announcing new subjects in January, to avoid disrupting students’ education.
