Major roads across Lahore are likely to face severe disruption starting today (Friday) as the Young Doctors Association (YDA) Punjab has announced a city-wide protest.
The YDA, under the umbrella of the Grand Health Alliance (GHA), has revealed its plan to stage sit-ins on several key roads in a move to pressurise the Punjab government to reverse its decision to outsource public hospitals across the province.
According to YDA Punjab President Dr. Shaib Niazi, the protestors will begin blocking roads from 11 am, focusing on major arteries including:
- Jail Road
- Ferozepur Road
- Road leading to Mayo Hospital
- Access roads to Shaikh Zayed Hospital
- Jinnah Hospital route
- Sir Ganga Ram Hospital route
Dr. Niazi confirmed that protestors have been instructed to block these roads for all types of traffic, causing widespread traffic jams and severely affecting movement within the city.
Dr. Niazi criticised the government for ignoring 18 days of previous protests and said the road blockades are part of the YDA’s “Plan B.” He warned that any use of force by the police would result in a complete shutdown of government hospitals across Punjab, halting medical services.
