The Punjab Food Authority (PFA), led by Director General Asim Javed, conducted a surprise raid at the Bhera Motorway Service Area to ensure safe and hygienic food for travelers.
During the inspection of 43 food outlets, three were fined a total of Rs. 145,000 for serious violations, while 40 others received improvement notices.
The food safety teams confiscated and discarded expired bottled water, stale vegetables, soft drinks, and substandard cooking oil on the spot. DG Asim Javed highlighted several alarming issues, including poor hygiene, use of expired products, and failure to comply with previous directives.
He noted that meat and dairy products were improperly stored together in dirty freezers, kitchens were infested with flies and lizards, food was left uncovered, and food handlers lacked necessary medical clearances.
DG Javed emphasized that surprise inspections will continue at food outlets on motorways, terminals, and major highways. He warned that the sale of unapproved food items on motorways is strictly prohibited.
Travelers and citizens are encouraged to report any food safety concerns through the PFA Helpline at 1223.
