The ceiling of an American airline collapsed mid-flight, forcing passengers to hold it up for almost 45 minutes.
Clips from the Delta Flight 2417 from Atlanta, GA to Chicago, IL went viral on social media.
Passenger Tom Witschy, sitting in seat 19B, said the panel crashed down right after takeoff, nearly hitting an older woman.
Tom and two other passengers held the heavy panel up with their hands for 30 to 45 minutes while the plane was in the air.
The flight crew couldn’t help at first because everyone had to stay seated. Later, a passenger offered bright yellow tape, and the crew used it to secure the panel.
The flight turned back to Atlanta instead of continuing to Chicago. Passengers were given 10,000 air miles as thanks, but many were frustrated by the long delay. Delta called it a “cabin maintenance” issue and apologized for the inconvenience. No one was hurt.
