Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a wheat support subsidy of Rs. 5,000 per acre for 600,000 farmers under the Kissan Card program.
Presiding over a high-level meeting, CM Maryam announced that even those farmers who do not currently possess a Kissan Card will still be eligible for the subsidy. She added that billions of rupees in subsidies will be provided for the next crop cycle as well.
Officials briefed the meeting that farmers have so far used Rs. 36 billion through the Kissan Card scheme to buy agricultural inputs, with 60% of loans already disbursed. Farmers have also repaid Rs. 22 billion in loans taken under the program. The second installment for the upcoming crop has now been released.
It was further revealed that nearly 50% of applications for the wheat support program have been verified.
In a separate session, the chief minister reviewed the proposed solarisation of agricultural tubewells. Implementation plans for the wheat subsidy were discussed in detail, along with a proposal to include contractors alongside landowners in the scheme
