The federal government of Pakistan has unveiled a new initiative to plant fruit trees along the country’s motorways and highways, aiming to support green growth, attract private investment, and advance national climate goals.
The project was finalized during a high-level meeting in Islamabad between Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Malik and Minister for Communications Aleem Khan. The program allows private investors to lease land next to highways and motorways for cultivating climate-appropriate fruit trees under a three-year lease model.
According to an official statement, the initiative seeks to increase Pakistan’s green cover while offering income-generating opportunities through environmentally friendly commercial activity.
“This initiative not only enhances our ecological footprint but also opens up new economic avenues for sustainable development,” said Dr. Musadik Malik, emphasizing the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving Pakistan’s environmental goals.
The Ministry of Climate Change will provide technical support to investors, including guidance on accessing carbon credits—making the project more financially viable and appealing to the private sector.
Officials noted that the plan is aligned with Pakistan’s broader climate action strategy and is expected to serve as a model for similar green ventures across the country in the future.

And people will be on the green areas for the fruits by putting their life at stake by crossing highways.
Build over head bridges too for the people.
clowns bringing another failed scheme.
You are correct
It takea more than three years for a fruit tree to produce fruit. How is three years lease model going to work?
Country means only Punjab
Very good decisions
A very bad idea as the creatures will attack on fruit trees which will create difficulties for commuters
Bad decision…. fruit needs care, fertilizer, insecticide protection etc who will do it on highways and motorways. neem tree or any self growing plants must be better
Green initiative? Where was this green initiative when they cut down trees for their so called green line or red line projects? The great example for this is Karachi’s University road.
And remember the cities in the country are only Rawalpindi, Lahore and Islamabad.
Agreed
That is not a good idea. Fruit trees, once mature will become the cause of roadside accidents, definitely. Instead, plant Moringa Trees, Paulownia Trees, as these are medicinal and wood stock of value. Who gives these ideas anyway.
سفیدھے کے سارے درخت کاٹ کر وھاں پر ثالی شیشم لگا دیں اور نہروں کے کنارے پاک آرمی کو ٹھیکے پر دے دیں وہاں پر زیتون لگا لیں
Fruit trees are good idea but the program should be fully brain stormed. Which fruits are suitable for certain areas and fruit trees should be planted according to the weather of that area.
No it doesn’t . Trees don’t grow just bcz you want them to .
They need tending and looking after. Where are you going to get so many maalis to tend to those trees ?
Great idea and need to use the other land along with motorways can be used for cattle farming
that’s the dumbest idea. local people will be near motorway picking fruit . plant ever green trees instead
Plantation a healthy initiative
No it isnt
Are they nuts. It’ll bring birds…dangerous to plying vehicles specially trucks and buses.
Stupid idea by GoP planners, due to public safety and road safety, who plants fruit tres on highway… Safety issue given our public zero awareness of road safety….
Really impressive Federal Govt initiative to grow fruit plants alongside motor ways and highways. I suggest to include also canals too in the proposed green grow project. If implemented in true sense, the climate issues will be improved.
Yes why not open s canal in the motorway lol
We can use boats instead of cars
Yes . Let’s not plant it on agricultural land that ALREADY exists .
Let’s plant them next to roads where no one can look after them
The policy makers don’t know anything about agriculture.
An interesting idea but one of the challenges, besides what other concerned citizens have raised, would be of irrigation. It is estimated that fruit trees require somewhere between 20 percent to 50 percent more water for their growth and optimum fruit production. In a developing country where water supply is scarce this question will need careful consideration before undertaking new projects that may require the quantum of water that may not be easily available.
Finally, It is a great initiative to do this with Public Private Partnership.
