The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has already filled the white-ball head coaching vacancy and is now actively weighing options for its red-ball coaching setup, with former captain Misbah-ul-Haq emerging as one of the leading candidates under consideration for the role.
The news was first reported by Geo News, as the board continues its restructuring of the national team’s coaching staff.
Misbah-ul-Haq, who previously served as Pakistan’s head coach and chief selector from 2019 to 2021, is being considered as part of a broader review of Pakistan’s red-ball strategy for the next World Test Championship cycle.
According to the report, Misbah-ul-Haq is not the only name on the table. Multiple former cricketers—both domestic and international—are believed to be in contention as the PCB seeks to install a specialist red-ball coaching unit separate from the white-ball leadership, now headed by Mike Hesson following his recent appointment.
While the PCB has yet to make an official announcement, sources indicate that internal discussions have intensified in recent days.
Misbah’s potential return would mark a notable shift, especially considering his prior tenure ended amid criticism over Pakistan’s inconsistent results. However, his calm leadership style, strong understanding of Test cricket, and emphasis on discipline are qualities that reportedly appeal to the current administration.
He also served as one of the team mentors in domestic competitions before that position was abolished.
The board is expected to finalize its decision in the coming weeks, with a formal announcement likely before the start of Pakistan’s next Test assignments.
