OpenAI has officially launched its GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models for ChatGPT users, the company announced Wednesday on X. The new models are now available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, with GPT-4.1 mini also accessible to free-tier users.
Enhanced Coding and Instruction Capabilities
According to OpenAI spokesperson Shaokyi Amdo, GPT-4.1 offers improved capabilities for software development tasks, including writing and debugging code. Compared to GPT-4o, GPT-4.1 reportedly performs better at following instructions and executing reasoning tasks, while maintaining higher speed.
The update also retires GPT-4.0 mini, which will no longer be available to users following the rollout of its 4.1 replacement.
Backlash On Initial Launch
GPT-4.1 and 4.1 mini were first made available in April 2024 through OpenAI’s developer API, but not without controversy. The initial release drew criticism from parts of the AI research community, who flagged the lack of a formal safety report. In response, OpenAI argued that GPT-4.1 did not meet the threshold for a “frontier model,” and therefore did not require the same transparency measures.
OpenAI’s Head of Safety Systems, Johannes Heidecke, clarified on Wednesday that GPT-4.1 “doesn’t introduce new modalities or surpass o3 in intelligence,” suggesting a different risk profile compared to more advanced models.
In tandem with the release, OpenAI also launched a new Safety Evaluations Hub, committing to share internal model safety assessments more frequently
AI Coding Tools Under Spotlight
The deployment of GPT-4.1 comes amid growing competition in the AI-powered coding assistant space. OpenAI is reportedly nearing a $3 billion acquisition of Windsurf, a widely used AI coding platform. On the same day, Google also expanded its Gemini chatbot with better integration for GitHub projects, signaling heightened interest in developer-focused AI tools.
