Pakistan’s young squash stars Ashab Irfan and Hamza Khan continue to raise the country’s squash flag high after advancing to the quarterfinal stage of the South Australian Open 2025, marking a strong showing for the country in one of the key events on the PSA Challenger Tour calendar.
Ashab Irfan, playing with authority and precision after a first-round bye, brushed aside Hong Kong’s Leo Chung in straight games—11-7, 11-5, 11-5—to book his place in the final eight. The Pakistani right-hander was in complete control throughout the contest, keeping Chung under constant pressure with his disciplined court coverage and clinical shot selection.
The number one seed will now take on Joachim Chuah for a place in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, former World Junior Champion Hamza Khan was made to work harder for his win but delivered a statement performance of his own. After dropping the opening game to Egypt’s Shady Sherbiny, the sixth seed roared back with a composed and calculated response to seal a 3-1 victory (5-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-4). His physical fitness and tactical nous shone through, as he adjusted seamlessly after a nervy start to take control of the match.
Hamza’s next opponent will be Japan’s Tomo Endo, the fourth seed in this year’s South Australian Open 2025. If both players are successful, Hamza and Ashab will compete against each other for a place in the final, as they are on the same side of the draw.
This double triumph means Pakistan will be represented by two players in the quarterfinals of the South Australian Open—a positive development in the country’s efforts to re-establish itself as a competitive force in the global squash landscape.
The South Australian Open 2025, held in Adelaide, continues to serve as an important stepping stone for rising talent on the professional tour. For Pakistan, these quarterfinal spots are more than just individual milestones—they signal the continued resurgence of a proud squash nation once synonymous with greatness.
