Interior Minister Announces Another Underpass for Islamabad

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is preparing to launch work on the long-awaited Shaheen Chowk underpass project, aimed at easing daily traffic congestion near Islamabad’s major educational institutions.

The project is seen as a key step toward improving traffic flow in an area frequently used by university students, staff, and residents.

According to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the design phase of the underpass is almost complete, and construction will begin soon. He emphasized that the project holds significant importance due to the presence of several universities in the vicinity, where daily traffic jams have become a routine problem for commuters.

Sources within CDA confirmed that the underpass is part of a broader plan to upgrade Islamabad’s road network. Once completed, it will help reduce travel time and improve access between sectors and key roads in the capital.

This project follows the successful completion of the Jinnah Square Murree Road underpass, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. That underpass was completed in just 35 days and is now providing direct access from Murree Road to Srinagar Highway.

  • There are way more important things for CDA to finish than just starting random underpasses every tuesday… like ffs I’ve seen so many projects started and left mid way and when you ask CDA why they say they dont have resources..of course when you focus on underpasses all the time what resources will you have…

Its been months that the electric bus charging depot is to be completed…why ??? why is CDA delaying such a critical project… because of that out of 160 electric busses only some 20-30 are on roads

    • Tarmri chowk and alipur bank stop please check
Also part of Islamabad please also make a underpass

  • Tarnol railway crossing is also part of Islamabad, please also make a overhead OR underpass

  • CDA must prioritize public transport over a car-friendly city. Islamabad was envisioned to encourage walking and public transport, yet the government keeps constructing underpasses and flyovers. If this trend continues, we’ll find them at every corner. By shifting our focus to public transport and bicycle lanes, we can tackle issues like smog and climate change. Expanding our public transport options to include more e-buses, electric trams, and an underground metro system may be costly. Still, to solve our greatest challenges, we must embrace significant investments!

  • CDA should provide the most needed underpass, on Iran Avenue, to facilitate exit from E-11 sector towards Margalla Road. The exchequer money must not be wasted for show-offs, kickbacks & commission etc.

  • Such lucrative projects are frequently announced without proper feasibility assessments. Every other day, a new one pops up. The mushrooming of underpasses and flyovers in Islamabad has ruined the city’s aesthetics and destroyed its greenbelts. Just look at the quality of work—it’s very poor. It seems they were in such a hurry that the construction appears uneven and unfinished. For God’s sake, don’t destroy the real beauty of Islamabad.

  • We need to set our priorities right. Extending cities is not a solution but invitation to more problems. Funds should be used to support and facilitie villages and towns.

Furthermore, we are at a brink of war. It can happen anytime our enemy finds another opportunity. We should focus and divert funds on developing our own (indigenous, made in Pakistan) airwarfare equipment, drones, UAVs and state of the art anti-air defence systems.
