Honda is revising its near-term strategy to focus on hybrid vehicles, responding to shifting market demands and production considerations. While the company maintains its long-term objective of carbon neutrality by 2050, it now plans to introduce 13 new hybrid models globally between 2027 and 2031.
New e: HEV Self-Charging System
The upcoming models will incorporate Honda’s next-generation e: HEV self-charging hybrid system. The system aims to improve fuel efficiency, enhance performance, reduce vehicle packaging size, and lower production costs. Honda also plans to equip these vehicles with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) to meet updated safety expectations.
Prelude Returns as Hybrid Coupe
Honda also plans to relaunch the Prelude, set to return later this year across North America, Japan, and Europe. The redesigned coupe will feature a hybrid powertrain and a “S+ Shift” mode that simulates manual gear changes. Honda plans a mid-cycle refresh for the model around 2028.
Honda Civic Could Become Hybrid
Several key models are scheduled for hybrid upgrades:
- A 12th-generation Civic is expected by 2028, following the light update applied to the current 11th-generation model in 2024.
- The next-generation CR-V, including its Chinese-market variants (Dongfeng CR-V and GAC Honda Breeze), will launch in 2027.
- The Pilot SUV will likely be replaced by a hybrid-only, three-row model in the US by 2029. Honda has stated that this vehicle will maintain towing capability and strong performance, suggesting it will serve as the Pilot’s successor.
Honda Accord and Odyssey Refresh
The Accord remains part of Honda’s global sedan portfolio due to continued demand in China. The current 11th-generation model, introduced in late 2022, will receive a facelift soon. A full redesign is planned for the fourth quarter of 2027, with continued production in both China and the US.
The Odyssey minivan, launched in 2017 and refreshed in 2021 and 2025, is expected to undergo a complete redesign by 2028. This version will likely replace the traditional 3.5-liter V6 engine with a hybrid powertrain.
