National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) has issued important safety instructions outlining what to do if a vehicle falls into a body of water. While rare, such incidents can be life-threatening. Understanding how to respond can significantly improve the chances of survival.
According to NHMP, the most critical factor is time. A vehicle can begin to sink within 30 to 60 seconds, so immediate action is essential. Rather than calling for help, the focus should be on escaping the vehicle as quickly as possible.
Steps to Follow
1. Stay Calm and Take Control
Panic can hinder decision-making. Take a deep breath and concentrate on executing the escape plan quickly and effectively.
2. Unbuckle Your Seatbelt
Remove your seatbelt as soon as possible. If you are with passengers, assist them only after you have freed yourself.
3. Do Not Attempt to Open the Door
The external water pressure makes opening the door nearly impossible and wastes valuable time. This can also accelerate water entry.
4. Open the Window Immediately
Attempt to lower the window using the power controls. These may still function briefly before the electrical system fails.
5. Break the Window if Necessary
If the window does not open, use a window-breaking tool. Aim for a corner of the side window rather than the center or the windshield, which is more difficult to break. NHMP recommends keeping such a tool within easy reach, such as on a keychain or in the center console.
6. Escape Through the Window
Exit the vehicle through the open or broken window. If there are other occupants, assist them in exiting, prioritizing children and those needing help.
7. Swim to the Surface
Swim toward visible light or follow air bubbles to the surface. Once safe, seek assistance by calling emergency services.
NHMP emphasizes the importance of being prepared in advance. Keep a seatbelt cutter and window breaker accessible in your vehicle at all times. These tools can be lifesaving in underwater emergencies.

Unlatch your car seat’s headrest and use its metal rods to strike the corner of the window, as it’s a readily available inside the car.
