Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a historic reduction in electricity tariffs for the public across the province. The Punjab Cabinet has approved a series of major public relief and development initiatives.
Key measures include a 30% to 40% reduction in electricity tariffs, the launch of Punjab’s first government-backed airline, and the distribution of 1,100 free electric taxis in Lahore.
At its 26th meeting in Lahore, the cabinet endorsed a 101-point agenda focused on public welfare, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and digital transformation. The electricity tariff cut, which applies to power companies like Quaid-e-Azam Thermal Power and Punjab Thermal Power, makes Punjab the first province to voluntarily lower electricity rates, providing significant relief to households.
The cabinet also approved the establishment of Air Punjab, aiming to begin operations by the end of 2025 to improve regional connectivity and offer affordable domestic flights. In addition, electric buses will be introduced in nine divisions, with charging stations set up in major cities. The government has also ordered the immediate closure of vaping centers across Punjab due to health concerns.
Other initiatives include a Rs40 billion upgrade for government schools, the creation of Nawaz Sharif Medical City in Lahore, and the establishment of a medical college in Layyah. Farmers will benefit from a Rs5,000 per acre subsidy, and new support programs for workers and miners have been approved. The cabinet also announced eco-tourism projects, urban development plans, and financial support for journalists and victims’ families.
These measures reflect the government’s commitment to public welfare and sustainable development across Punjab.
