Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is expected to inaugurate two major infrastructure projects in Rawalpindi — the Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road and the GPO Underpass on The Mall — after Eid ul Azha.
The inauguration was earlier scheduled for Tuesday, but was postponed due to the chief minister’s engagements in Lahore. Authorities have now decided to open both projects on the same day following the Eid holidays.
The Nawaz Sharif Flyover, located at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road, was launched in January with an allocated budget of Rs. 2.113 billion. The 1,915-foot-long, 52-foot-wide flyover stands 16.75 feet high and is aimed at easing traffic congestion in the area.
Upon opening, it is expected to benefit around 79,000 vehicles daily. Meanwhile, the GPO Double Barrel Underpass on The Mall is nearing completion. Stretching over one kilometre from TM Chowk near GHQ to Military Hospital, the underpass is being built at a cost of Rs. 4.6 billion.
The project is part of the Punjab government’s broader plan to make The Mall a signal-free corridor and is expected to facilitate around 250,000 vehicles.
