The Lahore traffic police has started equipping traffic wardens with body cameras as part of a new initiative aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability during traffic enforcement. These body cameras are being integrated directly into the uniforms of the traffic wardens.
According to Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr. Athar Waheed, the rollout has begun with wardens stationed on Mall Road. The primary purpose of the body cameras is to record real-time interactions between traffic wardens and motorists. This will ensure that no traffic challan is issued without clear video evidence, protecting both the officers and the public.
Dr. Waheed stated that legal action will be taken against anyone found interfering with official duties. The footage captured will not only support challan issuance but also help authorities review crowd behavior during protests, processions, and other public events.
Finer details, such as more areas of deployment, are still unknown. It is also unclear whether other cities will follow the same initiative. However, if these body cameras prove successful in Lahore, there is a high chance we will get to see the same change in other cities as well.
