Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi on Monday announced a major development for passengers travelling between Rawalpindi and Lahore, revealing that the train speed on the route will be increased to 160 kilometers per hour, cutting travel time down to just two hours.
Speaking to the media at the Ministry of Railways, Abbasi said that the upgrade in speed was part of broader efforts to modernize the railway network and enhance passenger convenience.
The minister also shared several upcoming projects, including the launch of an international freight train service from Lahore to the Iranian border, ultimately reaching Russia.
He noted that work was ongoing to establish railway connectivity with Kazakhstan as well, aimed at expanding trade with Central Asian nations. Highlighting Pakistan Railways’ financial performance, Abbasi stated that the department generated Rs. 83 billion in revenue during the first 11 months of the fiscal year—a record figure.
He added that 1,413 new wagons are currently being built, with 500 designated for freight services. Additional initiatives include a new Lahore-Narowal train service starting June 15, a 20% discount on passenger fares during Eid, and the operation of five special Eid trains.
The minister further revealed that Royal Palm Express’s international tendering had been completed, and efforts are underway to outsource eight hospitals and 14 schools to improve healthcare and education services for railway employees and their families.

Very sorry to mentioned that all railway projects on just paper as we are listening since long, practically no positive development.
