Man Ends His Life After Escaping Malir Prison

A 25-year-old man who escaped during the recent mass jailbreak at District Jail Malir has died by suicide in Madni Colony, Mauripur. Police identified the deceased as Raza, a resident of Ranchor Line, who was found hanging inside his sister’s home.

Authorities were alerted after the discovery, and Raza’s body was moved to the Civil Hospital for medico-legal procedures. According to Mauripur SHO Sardar Ali Abbasi, Raza was alone at his sister’s house at the time of the incident.

Raza had been jailed in connection with a narcotics case registered at Eidgah police station in March 2022. He was among more than 200 inmates who escaped during the jailbreak between Tuesday and Wednesday night, prompting a large-scale police search and investigation. So far, 126 escapees have been re-arrested or have returned voluntarily, while at least 90 remain at large.

A video statement recorded by Raza before his death has surfaced, highlighting the psychological distress faced by some escapees. In the video, Raza claims innocence and describes the chaos during the escape, including gunfire and injuries. He recounts wandering for hours before reaching Civil Hospital and eventually returning to his family.

Raza’s death has raised concerns about the mental health of escapees and the management of the prison system. In a contrasting incident, another escaped prisoner from Malir Jail was personally returned to authorities by his mother, who pleaded for leniency and forgiveness for her son’s actions, demonstrating the emotional toll and difficult choices faced by families in the aftermath of the jailbreak. Police continue their search for the remaining fugitives.
