Pakistan’s public health spending remains critically low, with the government allocating just 0.9% of GDP, amounting to Rs. 924.9 billion, for health in the fiscal year 2024-25, according to the latest Economic Survey.
This marks a modest increase from last year’s Rs. 843.2 billion, but the sector continues to face significant funding challenges as population needs grow.
Despite the tight budget, the government has reiterated its commitment to universal health coverage. For the upcoming year, Rs. 103.5 billion has been earmarked for health sector projects under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), aiming to improve access and quality of care nationwide.
The Economic Survey highlights some progress, such as an increase in the number of registered doctors and improvements in life expectancy. However, the doctor-to-patient ratio remains concerning, and child mortality rates are still high.
Experts warn that sustained underinvestment could undermine efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s healthcare system and meet the needs of its rapidly growing population.
