Solar Panel Prices Increase Massively After Budget

Solar panel prices have surged in local markets ahead of the proposed 18% sales tax on imports, set to take effect from July 1, pending budget approval.

Traders at Karachi’s Regal Chowk in Saddar blamed importers for the spike, saying many customers were shocked by the sudden increase. Some left without making a purchase, while others rushed to buy systems fearing further hikes.

One trader said a 5kW system with an inverter, water-based battery, iron frames, wiring, and installation now costs Rs. 600,000–700,000. A 3kW system is priced at Rs. 400,000–500,000, while a 6kW setup ranges between Rs. 700,000–800,000.

Another trader quoted Rs. 800,000–850,000 for a 5kW system with a lithium battery, up from Rs. 700,000–750,000 before the FY26 budget. A 3kW system with a lithium battery now costs Rs. 750,000, while the same setup with a water battery is available for Rs. 350,000–400,000.

Traders warned that without supportive measures like tax-free zones, the 18% tax could fuel smuggling through grey channels. One trader suggested a 5% protective duty on finished panels and urged the government to support local manufacturing and financing options to stabilize the market.
