In a move that could become one of the Big Bash League’s most significant international signings, the Sydney Sixers have confirmed the acquisition of former Pakistan captain Babar Azam for the upcoming BBL 15 season.
The move was all but confirmed yesterday and marks Babar Azam’s first foray into the Australian league. The 30-year-old was Sydney Sixers’ direct signing, permitted through the league’s provision, underlining his status as a modern great.
“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Babar to the Sixers this summer,” said Sixers General Manager Rachael Haynes. “Babar’s resume speaks for itself. The skill, professionalism, and experience that he brings is of enormous value to our playing group, and the news is obviously incredibly exciting for our fans.”
“He is a world-class player and a proven leader. He’s not only a huge addition to our club, but to the league as a whole.”
Babar Azam also expressed his delight at joining Sydney Sixers in his message to his fans.
“I’m very proud to be joining the Sydney Sixers for the upcoming season,” Babar said. “It’s an exciting opportunity to play in one of the world’s best T20 leagues and to be a part of such a successful and respected franchise.”
His signing also means that the world will get to witness Steve Smith and Babar Azam in the same team for the first time ever.
With more than 11,000 T20 runs and a glittering international career that includes over 10,000 runs across formats, two ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year awards, and the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year title in 2022, Babar Azam’s pedigree is beyond doubt.
With stints in the PSL, CPL, and English domestic leagues already under his belt, the 30-year-old’s BBL debut is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated storylines of the season.
