Khan’s political career spans over two decades, beginning with his election to the National Assembly in 2002 as a candidate for the Pakistan Muslim League (Q). He served as Minister of State for Finance from 2004 to 2007 under Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

After joining the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2018, he was elected to the National Assembly from NA-17 (Haripur) and held key ministerial roles under Imran Khan’s government, including Federal Minister for Energy (2018–2021) and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs (2021–2022). Following PTI’s challenges after Khan’s ouster in 2022, Khan became PTI’s Secretary-General in May 2023, a role he held until resigning in June 2024 to focus on his opposition leadership.

In the 2024 general elections, Khan ran as a PTI-backed independent, winning his seat despite party setbacks, and was later elected as the 12th Leader of the Opposition on April 2, 2024. He has been a vocal advocate for Imran Khan, alleging election rigging and criticizing the current government.
