A dangerous meat supply network has been uncovered in the city, where spoiled and diseased chickens were being distributed to popular food outlets, including well-known fast food points, hotels, and roadside shawarma and burger stalls.
According to reports, the transportation of dead poultry was being carried out through motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, and other informal means. Acting on a tip-off, the Punjab Food Authority conducted a targeted raid in Tollinton Market, where they apprehended a rickshaw driver involved in the supply of hazardous meat.
During the operation, over 217,000 kilograms of meat were inspected from various suppliers and storage facilities in the area. Authorities immediately destroyed 1,800 unfit and diseased chickens found on-site to prevent them from entering the food chain.
The Food Authority stated that a formal case has been registered against the supplier, and further investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of the supply chain. Officials highlighted that individuals driven by greed are endangering public health and that action is being taken against such elements with zero tolerance.
The authority added that efforts are being accelerated to implement an international-standard meat processing and distribution system to ensure safe and hygienic food reaches consumers.
