Several cities in Pakistan recorded dangerously high “feels-like” temperatures Saturday, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warning of severe heat stress and health risks.
According to data issued by PMD’s National Weather Forecasting Centre, Sibbi, Multan, and Bahawalpur experienced feels-like temperatures exceeding 52°C at 11:00 AM on June 21. Sibbi and Multan recorded heat indices of 52.2°C and 52.0°C respectively, while Bahawalpur topped the list at 52.7°C.
Other cities also reported concerning heat index levels. Peshawar recorded a heat index of 50.8°C, followed by Dera Ismail Khan at 50.3°C. Sargodha and Faisalabad were close behind at 49.8°C.
The PMD categorizes heat index levels above 54°C as “Extreme Danger”, 41–54°C as “Danger”, and 32–41°C as “Extreme Caution”. Prolonged exposure to such heat can lead to serious health complications, especially for vulnerable groups.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and take regular breaks if working outdoors.
