WhatsApp is developing a new AI-based Writing Help feature designed to assist users in refining their messages while maintaining privacy. The upcoming tool, currently in development for iOS via the TestFlight beta program (version 25.18.10.79), will be able to enhance messages in real time.
The Writing Help feature will integrate directly into the message typing screen, offering suggestions to improve clarity, adjust tone, or rephrase text. WhatsApp is implementing the tool using a secure infrastructure called Private Processing, which ensures that messages are never stored or linked to individual identities. All processing takes place within a privacy-preserving environment, keeping user data secure throughout the enhancement process.
This will bring access to a range of tones tailored to different needs, such as professional formatting for workplace communication, playful edits for casual chats, and supportive language for empathetic interactions. WhatsApp plans to expand this selection over time, giving users even more options to choose from.
When a suggestion is chosen, the original text is replaced with the AI-enhanced version, but the recipient remains unaware that AI was used.
WhatsApp has made it clear that Writing Help will be entirely optional. It can be activated or deactivated through app settings, and users can also choose to ignore these AI suggestions, even if the feature is on. WhatsApp clarifies that the tool analyzes only the message currently being typed, never accessing past conversations or chat histories.
Feedback on the suggestions is also handled with strict privacy safeguards. Instead of sharing content with Meta or WhatsApp, users can provide anonymous satisfaction ratings to help improve the feature without exposing their private messages.
