President Donald Trump announced that a buyer has been secured for TikTok, but did not reveal who it is, only saying that it is a “wealthy group of people.” He added that Chinese approval will still be required to finalize the deal, and that President Xi Jinping will “probably do it.”
Trump made this announcement during an interview with FoxNews, where he said:
We have a buyer for TikTok by the way. I think I’ll need probably China approval and I think President Xi [Jinping] will probably do it.
When asked about who the buyer is, he said, “I’ll tell you in about two weeks.”
The app’s uncertain future stems from a series of executive orders aimed at banning TikTok from US app stores over national security concerns. The initial order was signed after Trump began his second term in January, with multiple deadline extensions—first to April, and then an additional 90 days, pushing the cutoff to mid-September.
TikTok’s parent company, China-based ByteDance, has been under growing pressure from US authorities to sell the app or face a nationwide ban. With over 170 million American users, the app’s data collection practices have sparked widespread concern among lawmakers over potential ties to the Chinese government.
In his interview, Trump dismissed the repeated deadline extensions, calling them “no big deal.” He did not comment further on how the deal might address ongoing data security issues or whether ByteDance would retain any stake in the platform.
Up until now, ByteDance and China have been against any form of sale of TikTok’s US operations, so it remains to be seen whether this new offer will be accepted.
