The newly built Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road is now open to traffic, even though its official inauguration by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has been delayed from the initially scheduled date of June 30.
Constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.3 billion, the flyover is part of a broader infrastructure improvement initiative in Rawalpindi. This initiative also includes two underpasses and a pedestrian underpass along Mall Road, developed at a combined cost of over Rs. 4.38 billion.
While construction on all components has been completed, the underpasses remain closed pending the chief minister’s rescheduled visit for formal inauguration.
According to the Punjab Communication and Works Department, these facilities will be opened to the public once the CM gives the green light—mirroring the early opening approach taken with the Nawaz Sharif Flyover.
Meanwhile, authorities have finalized plans to build additional underpasses at Qasim Market, Race Course, and Chairing Cross along Peshawar Road. A larger proposal is also under review for two flyovers and three underpasses at Kachehri Chowk, though an official timeline for the launch of that project has not yet been announced.
