Punjab’s Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced that over 47,000 surplus teachers in government schools will be rationalized over the next two weeks. The minister made the statement via his official Facebook page.
Rationalization involves redistributing teachers from overstaffed schools to those facing acute shortages, with the aim of improving educational outcomes and reducing administrative inefficiencies.
This move comes as Punjab’s public education system grapples with a severe teacher shortage. According to official figures, around 65% of permanent teaching posts in government schools across the province are currently vacant.
These vacancies include thousands of positions in grades 17 to 20, particularly for headmasters, headmistresses, and senior subject specialists.
Sources in the education sector say the number of unfilled posts has surged due to delays in promotions and lack of timely recruitment. In total, the province faces a shortfall of nearly 100,000 teachers, significantly affecting student learning—especially in rural areas and South Punjab, where access to private tuition is limited.
