Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the severe waterlogging situation in Islamabad’s Diplomatic Enclave, where rainwater has accumulated outside the Embassy of the Netherlands and flooded its basement.
The Prime Minister was directly contacted by the Dutch ambassador, who raised urgent concerns regarding the difficulties faced by diplomatic staff due to stagnant rainwater.
The flooding, which has persisted for three consecutive days, in the high-security zone. The crisis reportedly stems from the construction of the Serena underpass, during which a natural stormwater drain was allegedly blocked with soil and debris. This obstruction has caused water to back up into the enclave. Despite the passage of several days, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has failed to drain the water.
Authorities have now launched efforts to trace the original stormwater channel, which is believed to be critical to restoring proper drainage. In the meantime, road access to Murree from this area has been closed to prevent further disruption. The Prime Minister has expressed deep dissatisfaction over the CDA’s failure to resolve the issue in a timely manner.
The Prime Minister has directed all concerned departments to provide an immediate solution and submit a detailed report on the causes and delays. He also ordered an urgent assessment to improve the drainage infrastructure in the Diplomatic Enclave to prevent future incidents. A high-level investigation is expected to be launched into the matter.
Emphasizing the importance of protecting diplomatic staff and maintaining the functioning of foreign missions, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that ensuring the safety and convenience of international missions is a top government priority. He stressed that no foreign mission should face such disruptions, and instructed authorities to ensure such negligence is not repeated.
