The Punjab government has set March 30, 2027, as the target completion date for the Gujranwala Mass Transit Project.
Project Director confirmed the deadline in a recent update on the project’s construction progress.
The system, also known as the Gujranwala Yellow Line, is being developed to provide a modern public transport service across the city.
The planned transit corridor will cover approximately 31.5 kilometres between Gakhar and Aimanabad.
The route will run through major parts of Gujranwala and connect residential, commercial and industrial areas along the corridor.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the updated project design in May 2026. The government also directed officials to connect different parts of the city with the main line through feeder buses.
Under the approved design, authorities plan to construct two tunnel sections to reduce disruption to road traffic.
The government has also granted in-principle approval for around 17 to 19 kilometres of the transit corridor to run underground.
The latest approved plan includes 24 stations, including two underground stations.
Authorities will establish transit depots at:
Solar power systems will be installed at each station and depot.
Meanwhile, a dedicated command and control centre will monitor operations, security and passenger services.
The project also includes a 62-kilometre drainage network along both sides of the mass transit corridor.
The drainage work aims to prevent rainwater accumulation and reduce flooding on roads running alongside the route.
The Punjab government initially announced the Yellow Line project at an estimated cost of Rs. 62.7 billion.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz laid the foundation stone for the system in December 2025.
At the launch, officials said the project would operate on green energy and use at least 36 electric buses.
They also estimated that the service would benefit around 51,000 passengers daily.
However, the final project cost may change because the government later approved additional underground sections and modifications to the original design.
Construction is currently progressing on the main corridor, depots, underpasses and associated road infrastructure.
Authorities now aim to complete the project by March 30, 2027.
Once operational, the Gujranwala Metro Bus system is expected to reduce pressure on private transport, improve mobility and provide residents with an electric public transport option.
