Crackdown on Multiple Single Meters Begins

The federal government has decided to formally initiate action against the installation of multiple single-phase electricity meters by individual users. The Power Planning and Monitoring Company (PPMC) has issued an official notification demanding meter-related data from all electricity distribution companies.

According to the notification, companies like LESCO and other regional distributors have been instructed to submit complete records of all installed meters by July 14. The data will include the number of meters installed and customer details. Based on this information, the federal government will determine the next phase of enforcement.

This audit aims to identify cases where consumers have installed additional meters to unfairly benefit from the protected consumer category—a classification that offers subsidized electricity rates.

Once identified, such misuse will be addressed under NEPRA regulations, which only allow one meter per household under the protected status. Any extra meters not complying with NEPRA’s standards will be subject to government-led action.

Consumers found violating the rules could face penalties or disqualification from receiving subsidized rates, depending on the final decision by the authorities.
