Implementation of New Matric and Intermediate Grading Policy Postponed Until 2026

The introduction of a new grading system for Matriculation (SSC) and Intermediate (HSC) exams across Pakistan has been officially postponed by one year. The updated policy will not apply to the Annual Examinations 2025 and will instead take effect from the 2026 examination session.

A formal notification has been released confirming this delay. Earlier, the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) had announced the new system, followed by a notification issued by the Sindh government on October 15, 2024, outlining the same policy for the 2025 exams. However, a more recent notification by the Sindh Universities and Boards Department, citing both the October 2024 and June 18, 2025 directives, has clarified that the policy will now be implemented starting from Annual Exams 2026.

Key Highlights of the New Grading Policy

Under the new scheme:

  • A++ (Exceptional): 95% to 100% marks, GPA 5.0
  • A+ (Outstanding): 90% to 94%
  • A (Excellent): 85% to 89%
  • B++ (Very Good): 80% to 84%
  • B+ (Good): 75% to 79%
  • B (Fairly Good): 70% to 74%
  • C (Above Average): 60% to 69%
  • D (Average): 50% to 59%
  • E (Below Average): 40% to 49%

Students scoring below 40% will be considered to have not met the minimum requirement. However, instead of being labeled as “fail,” such performance will be termed “Unsatisfactory”.

Additionally, the revised grading will initially be implemented from ninth and eleventh grades, with results released in Grade Points (GP), followed later by Grade Point Averages (GPA).

This new system aims to modernize Pakistan’s examination framework by aligning it with global assessment standards, focusing on a more detailed and performance-oriented evaluation rather than just pass/fail distinctions.
