WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to reply to messages in separate threads, similar to other chatting apps like Discord and Slack. The feature is currently under development and is expected to roll out in a future update for both iOS and Android.
The new threaded message reply system is designed to enhance user interaction in chats, particularly in groups. Each message will display a label showing the number of replies it has received. Tapping on this label will open a new screen, showing all responses related to that message in one spot, making it easy to follow up with replies.
This dedicated reply thread will allow users to read and send new responses directly within the same conversation context. A watermark will identify AI-generated or system-assisted responses.
This is especially valuable in large group chats, where multiple participants often respond to a single message. Threading replies ensures all responses remain connected to the original message, making it easier to follow along and participate.
The feature was recently spotted in version 25.19.10.80 of the WhatsApp iOS beta, available via TestFlight. The feature has been previously spotted on WhatsApp beta for Android as well, meaning it is coming for team green as well.
Although the feature is not yet available for public beta testing, the internal development is progressing. Users enrolled in the beta program will receive access once it’s stable enough for wider testing.
